8.1  Society for International Development for the Baking Industry(STIOS)

Stios is a non profit organisation in the Netherlands with its roots in the Dutch baking industry. The main aim is to transfer baking technology to developing countries. All members are well known in the baking industry in the Netherlands and some have international experience.
Stios carried out bakery projects in Africa, Rumania and Albania.

·         The Kenya project(1985-1990)

A bakery technology department was established at the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology(KIST), a technical training institute. A three year course was developed at secondary technical education level, consultancy was carried out by baking staff to commercial bakeries and short courses in bread and confectionary were developed. Most of the theory and practice mentioned on this site was developed during this project.

·         The Bulawayo Polytechnic in Zimbabwe

During this project a two year certificate and a one year diploma course were developed at the Hotel and Catering Department. During this project the Kenyan experience was used. In 2003 two experts trained staff in baking technology and the practice of baking.

·         Rumania

With the help of Bakkers voor Bakkers (Bakers for Bakers) and the Netherlands Management Co-operation Programme(NMCP) two institutes(Cluj-Napoca and Suceava) were assisted with some equipment and technical training to establish courses in baking.

The Grupul Scolar nr. 3 in Suceava still get some technical training from Stios and the NMCP.

·         Albania

A Hotel and Catering Institute in Tirana was provided with some equipment and courses in the teaching of baking were given by experienced Dutch bakery teachers(November 2004).
