8.4  Bakery Projects

A lot of people are involved in setting up projects in developing countries. Some people are setting up bakery projects. Some have a lot of experience which might be useful for you. Please mail us when you have questions on setting up bakery projects in developing countries; we might be able to advise you or give you the right address for more information.

·         The Classic Bakery, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

This commercial bakery was established with the assistance from a Dutch baker who donated equipment from his bakery which was stopped, another baker donated funds for transport and a generator and NMCP financed the missions of Mr. Van Engelen and Mr. Roeleveld. ·         Turkana women’s bakery, Kenya

In 10 villages bakeries were established in the diocese Lodwar with the help of Dorcas(www.dorcas.nl). A Dutch volunteer trained the women in bread and the income generating activities in the diocese of Lodwar.

·         Ghana

In November 2003, Albert  and Lisa Stroeve received a request from the Ghanaian Reverend Richard Essilfie-Awortwe for help to improve the alarming living conditions in the OOEIM orphanage. Albert and Lisa had visited the orphanage a year earlier, through the mediation of Jan Doets, station manager of WAMCO  (West Africa Mills Co) at Takoradi. In response to the request for support from The Netherlands, the Foundation Bebo Bakery was established in January 2004 in Zwolle. The founders of Bebo Bakery consist of a lawyer, an economist and specialists in bakeries and engineering. A working group was appointed for a fact finding mission and for the preparation of a business plan. The mission was carried out in February 2004 and its report written in March 2004.
